World Mental Health Day: Mental Wellness and Limb Loss

On October 10th, the world observes World Mental Health Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about mental health issues. For amputees, mental health can often be an overlooked aspect of recovery and rehabilitation. Feelings of loss, isolation, and anxiety are common, and without proper support, these emotions can lead to deeper struggles like depression.

At Less Leg More Heart, we are committed to providing mental health resources for the limb loss community through our peer mentorship programs and support groups. One of our core focuses is helping amputees build resilience, cope with new realities, and find purpose again. Our Heart to Heart peer support group is a place where individuals can share their stories, seek advice, and gain strength from others who have walked the same path.

This past September, we hosted a virtual Heart to Heart meeting with Kyle Sikes, a renowned Doctor of Physical Therapy, where we focused on the mental and physical aspects of preserving remaining limbs. It was a powerful reminder of the need for both mental and physical well-being. If you couldn’t attend, make sure to check out the video on our YouTube channel, and remember that prioritizing mental health is essential to thriving after limb loss.
